Just outside London in Croydon, The Addington Golf Club feels like a proper escape without a long trek.

The course is a real classic, built on a wooded hill and shaped by top amateur John Frederick Abercromby (with input from legendary architect Harry Colt), then officially opened on 18 October 1919.

It’s a par‑69 layout of around 6,300 yards, so it won’t beat you up with distance, but it will keep you honest: fairways weave through mature pine and birch, the slopes and contours demand smart shot choices, and the greens have plenty of movement.

The best bit is the atmosphere. You’re surrounded by woodland, yet from a few hilltop tees you can grab a quick look at the London skyline before you hit.

For a charity golf day, it’s a great fit. There’s room to warm up on the full‑size putting green, practice nets and a dedicated short‑game area with two greens (one flatter, one more undulating), so everyone can find their rhythm before the first tee. Add good clubhouse hospitality and you’ve got a day that feels relaxed, memorable and well worth playing for. It’s challenging enough for low handicaps, but still fun for first‑timers and big groups.
