The Charities

The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is a UK-based charity dedicated to saving the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders, with a particular focus on improving outcomes for Black, mixed-race, and ethnic minority patients. ACLT addresses a critical health inequality: patients from these communities are significantly less likely to find a matching stem cell or bone marrow donor.

The charity works to increase the number and diversity of donors on the stem cell register through targeted awareness campaigns, community engagement, and donor recruitment drives. In addition, ACLT provides emotional, practical, and financial support to patients and their families, helping them cope with the challenges of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

ACLT also invests in education and research, collaborating with healthcare providers and policymakers to improve access to lifesaving treatments. By tackling systemic barriers and promoting equity in healthcare, ACLT plays a vital role in giving more people the chance of survival and a future beyond blood cancer.

Age UK is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people. Its mission is to ensure that everyone can love later life, regardless of background, health, or financial circumstance. Age UK provides a wide range of practical services, advice, and support to help older people remain independent, safe, and connected. These include benefits and financial advice, social care support, befriending services to combat loneliness, and assistance with housing, mobility, and digital inclusion.

In addition to frontline services, Age UK plays a critical advocacy role, influencing public policy and raising awareness of issues affecting older people, such as pensioner poverty, social isolation, access to healthcare, and age discrimination. The charity combines national leadership with a strong local presence through its network of Age UK partners across the country, ensuring support is tailored to local needs.

With an ageing population, Age UK’s work is increasingly vital. By challenging inequalities, supporting carers, and campaigning for fairer systems, the charity helps older people live with dignity, purpose, and security in later life.

Food For The Poor Jamaica is a leading humanitarian charity dedicated to alleviating poverty and improving living conditions for vulnerable communities across Jamaica. Established as part of the wider Food For The Poor international organisation, the charity works closely with local partners, churches, community leaders, and volunteers to deliver practical, life-changing support to those most in need.

The organisation focuses on addressing the root causes of poverty through a combination of immediate relief and long-term development programmes. Its core areas of work include food assistance, housing construction and repair, access to clean water, healthcare support, education initiatives, and livelihood development. By providing nutritious meals, safe shelter, medical supplies, and educational resources, Food For The Poor Jamaica helps families build stability and resilience.

A key strength of the charity is its commitment to dignity and empowerment. Rather than offering short-term fixes alone, it invests in sustainable solutions that enable individuals and communities to become self-sufficient over time. This includes skills training, small-scale agriculture projects, and community infrastructure development.

Through strong stewardship, transparency, and local engagement, Food For The Poor Jamaica has earned a trusted reputation for making a tangible and lasting impact. Its work continues to transform lives, offering hope and opportunity to thousands of Jamaicans facing hardship.

Legacy Youth Zone is a local youth charity based in Croydon that offers a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for young people aged 8–19 and up to 25 for those with additional needs. It is part of the OnSide Youth Zones network and opened in 2019 to give young people “somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to.”

The organisation provides over 20 diverse activities every week, ranging from sports, arts, media and creative programmes to leadership opportunities, enterprise projects and holiday clubs. These activities are designed to build confidence, skills and aspirations, helping members discover their potential and grow in a positive, structured setting.

Membership is affordable (around £5 annually, plus a small visit fee), making it accessible to young people from all backgrounds. Beyond recreational activities, Legacy Youth Zone offers mentoring, support services, school engagement programmes, and opportunities for personal development.

Funded through community support, donations, and partnerships with local organisations, the charity focuses on creating a supportive community space where young people can make friends, build resilience and pursue their goals. Volunteers and youth workers play a central role in delivering these services and nurturing positive outcomes for members.
